As Denver considers 'The Next Stage' of development in its 50-year-old Performing Arts Complex, city councilors, arts aficionados and community members are brainstorming big dreams about new partners within the 12 acre development. From the perspective of senior Syeeda Keith, the most surprising - and fitting - suggestion for a potential complex upgrade is a brand-new high school campus for the Denver School of the Arts. "Bringing kids in here would be amazing," Keith said, holding back her excitement. "Me and my friends were talking about it before we got here this morning, and we were like, 'High school here? That would be amazing!'" Keith, who is attending the AMDA College and Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles next year, knows the impact the arts have had on her life. "You get to express who you are. It doesn't matter what shape or color you are, you can be talented, beautiful and strong [through the arts]." A new downtown DSA campus, Principal William Kohut says, would mean more opportunities for more students who are wanting to pursue the arts as an extracurricular interest or career. "We would be across the street from major universities. Imagine the partnerships, the internships, the concurrent enrollment opportunities. It really is phenomenal," he said. The Next Stage plan, however, is simply a list of dreams. Next, the city must strategize how it intends to pay for the ambitious proposed dream upgrades, which could include an outdoor performance stage, a rehearsal and recording studio, an expanded public sculpture park and the DSA high school campus. Other DPS students across the school system would also have more opportunities to expand their educational opportunities in the arts through partnerships with Denver School of the Arts. "My only personal regret [about this plan]," said Denver Public Schools Acting Superintendent Susana Cordova, "is that I can't be a kid all over again to have an opportunity like this."
